Job Summary

The technologist must have a working knowledge of histology techniques and have the capability to perform all standard work involving embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissues as well as a wide variety of non-standard techniques.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Routinely trim, embed, section, and stain hard and soft tissues of various sizes and conditions including eyes and bones
• Prepare tissues for light microscopic study by applying stains that may require microscopic differentiation
• Microscopically, examine random H and E slides for quality of section and stain. All special stains shall be examined
• Follow and perform published methods in histochemistry to maintain consistent results
• Prepare and maintain reagents, solutions, and stains according to standard formulas and SOP\'s
• Maintain laboratory equipment as required according to manufacturer and SOP\'s
• Perform immunohistochemistry, new techniques, and procedures
• Assist in the instruction of laboratory personnel in the principles and techniques of histological texts and examinations according to SOP\'s
• Other duties as assigned

Additional Physical Demands

The handling of any biological materials may present some risk of exposure to hazardous materials. Proper safety protocols must be maintained when handling and disposing of all materials. Allergies to hay, straw or animal dander may cause discomfort based on the location within the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

Per SUCSS Class Spec

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

American Society of Clinical Pathologists registered histologic technician HT (ASCP) or histotechnologist HTL (ASCP)

OR

Bachelor\'s Degree in science such as microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field plus one year of clinical histology experience

OR

Two years (24 months) of responsible work experience and/or on-the-job training in histologic techniques in a laboratory facility which include performing qualitative and quantitative exams such as trimming, processing and embedding tissues, examining histochemical and immunohistochemical slides, and/or cutting and staining frozen sections.

Preferred Qualifications

American Society of Clinical Pathologists registered histologic technician HT (ASCP) or histotechnologist HTL (ASCP)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must have expert knowledge of histology technologies, techniques and procedures
• Ability to recognize exceptions and take appropriate action if necessary

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4091 - Histology Technologist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/30/2024. The minimum starting salary is \$27.63 hourly. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
