Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 53 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated engineering organization consisting of over 300 engineers. Hanford was established to produce the world's first atomic bomb in the Second World War and continued producing plutonium for the Cold War efforts from 1945 to 1991. Washington River Protection Solutions' mission is to safely handle the byproduct of this massive operation, and to ensure a clean environment for future generations.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

This is a senior level engineering position that supports the Tank Farms Projects (TFP) Engineering team and will work closely with other project engineers, project managers and internal/external agencies. The candidate should be a motivated engineer interested in joining a high performing team focused on project execution, worker safety and deploying innovative engineering solutions to handle Hanford's most challenging tasks.

This position will work closely with all groups within the TFP Engineering organization to gain an understanding of the different type of work performed by the team. This position will lead a small team of project engineers on large Tank Farm infrastructure projects.

Tasks include managing all engineering aspects of their assigned projects to include performing field walk downs, interfacing with craft/field crews, presenting to Department of Energy, developing ECNs, DCNs and Statement of Work (SOW) as well as working with various internal and external design A&E and fabrication vendors.

  • Assume responsibility for the mechanical system aspects of specific projects/scope including design, application, test, or the preparation of specifications for systems, materials, equipment or components in collaboration with other engineering/science competencies within the team.

  • Prepare technical manuals, reports, procedures and deliver technical presentations to engineering, operations, projects, and customer organizations.

  • Conduct site/area visits and investigate engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations

  • Apply technical knowledge toward the reduction of the cost and improvement of systems where possible and incorporate new ideas resulting from engineering/scientific progress in the field.

  • Preparation of scope, cost, and schedules for projects/tasks.

  • Problem-solving for complex technical challenges with adaptations of engineering alternatives.

  • Plan technical effort and coordinate activities with those of other divisions, departments and sections in focuses areas to solve problems.

  • Ensure compliance with technical requirements of assigned work, proper utilization and training of personnel operating under one's technical guidance, and compliance with approved schedules and staffing estimates.

  • Ensures appropriate technical performance of the end product developed and designed to resolve the original problem.

  • Act as lead on projects and/or mentor less experience engineers

  • Ability to execute tasks with minimal oversight

  • Ability to solve highly technical problems

The engineer will be expected to complete WRPS' Engineering Technical Staff, Project Engineer and Design Authority (DA) qualification and eventually take over the Project DA on moderate to large infrastructure projects.

Required Qualifications

Grade 19:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree.

Nine (9) years related experience.

Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree.

Ten (10) years related experience.

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 21:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree.

Twelve (12) years related experience.

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer or Project Manager

PE or PMP certification.

  • Experience in the nuclear industry, preferably at Department of Energy (DOE) site.

  • Experience with AutoCAD.

Compensation & Benefits

Grade 19:

Hiring Range Minimum: $114,475

Hiring Range Maximum: $144,325

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $126,025

Hiring Range Maximum: $158,875

Grade 21:

Hiring Range Minimum: $138,700

Hiring Range Maximum: $174,900

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
