Veterans Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparatory program designed to provide academic refresher training and advising to qualifying veterans who are preparing to enter post-secondary education. Academic instruction is available in English, mathematics, science, career advising, computer literacy, and Spanish. This program is an opportunity for veterans to re-establish fundamental skills and study habits, which are prerequisites for successful performance at the post-secondary educational level. Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) provides access to academic resources, employment referrals, assistance with VA benefits applications and referrals to various community assistance organizations.

Description of Job

The Veterans Upward Bound Site Coordinator is a full-time position that will be responsible for all program activities at the Pikes Peak State College VUB site and may be required to travel for additional responsibilities as necessary. This staff member will advise low-income, potential first-generation students preparing to enter post-secondary education. This position reports to the VUB director as required, reporting on student population, classes, and other matters of importance to VUB as directed by the Director to promote and enhance the Veterans Upward Bound program. This position is funded through fiscal year 2027 by a renewable federal TRIO Veterans Upward Bound Grant.

Primary Duties

Identify target audience, recruit quality students and eligible prospective applicants for the VUB program; identify trends in student needs, wants and demands and develop processes and operations to improve student retention and enrollment. Conduct, design and participate in informational public speaking events and workshops. Assist in designing new service marketing strategies and models to maximize service quality. May be required to transport program participants using state-owned vehicles.

Coordinate with staff and administration at host institution while maintaining positive and constructive working relationships. This includes coordination regarding adequate office and administrative space and for classrooms adequately equipped to provide instruction for VUB students.

Maintain office supplies, textbooks and learning materials. Interview, hire and write instructor contracts for the classes offered in the VUB Program. Review, update and track student progress, attendance and enrollment.

Advise/interview veterans and complete in-take folders. Admit qualified veterans to the program. Keep records, satisfying grant requirements and objectives; complete, review and quality-check student intake forms and records; complete database entry and management for the annual report.

Create classroom schedules and curriculum for VUB courses. Assist in creating program evaluations and reviews; update and rewrite forms and brochures as required.

Act as a liaison with local veteran organizations/groups. Produce public service announcements for print, radio and TV advertising/outreach. Foster current business contacts and relationships while also developing new partnerships for future projects.

Coordinate with instructors in math and English to administer the TABE examination to measure student progress.

Ancillary Duties

Speak in the community as an advocate for veterans. Advocate for veteran students and mediate issues between students and academic institution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree

  • Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license and ability to gain access to military installations

  • Good written communication skills

  • Experience with managing or being a part of an academic or tutorial

program

  • Experience developing partnerships and community resource development

  • Experience in a position or activity that required proficient verbal communication skills

  • Experience working with students reported as first generation, those from low- socioeconomic backgrounds, or veteran populations

  • Experience that required or resulted in understanding of the impact of military service culture on learning

  • Experience with, or commitment to, working in a diverse workplace and serving diverse clients

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master's degree

  • Membership or association with local community veteran’s organizations

  • Knowledge of G.I. Bill Certifying Official Certification Process

  • Honorably discharged veteran

  • Knowledge about veteran's educational benefits

  • Knowledge of, and experience in, developing and managing grant proposals

  • Demonstrated experience and sensitivity working with low- income and first generation students

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office; including Access

Salary Range

$45,000 - $49,000
