GAF Maintenance Mechanic in Mt. Vernon, Indiana

Team or Function Overview

This position will be on the Mt. Vernon, Indiana plant operations team, located about 20 miles west of Evansville. This GAF site was founded in 1973 and produces a wide variety of asphaltic shingles and rolled roofing materials.

Summary

The primary responsibility of a mechanic is to evaluate, repair, and replace materials, products, and components for conformance to specifications by performing the duties listed below. This position works a rotating 12 hours and has an hourly starting pay rate of $38.70.

Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Detects, reports and repairs faulty operation, defective material and equipment and other unusual conditions to teammates and appropriate personnel.

  • Collaborates with appropriate personnel to transmit and exchange information pertinent to work related activities.

  • Responsible for operation of machines and equipment in compliance with Standard Operating Procedure.

  • Responsible for communicating quality and machine problems to supervisor, team members and maintenance.

  • Troubleshoot and repair facility equipment resulting in operational downtime ensuring the essential care, maintenance and operation of the equipment. Repairs requiring > 60 minutes and/or external resources must be reported to your supervisor (or designee).

  • Records essential data onto Preventative Maintenance work orders and Down Day work orders to ensure proper collection of data for maintenance and operation staff.

  • Verify component information, specifications and location before installation to ensure that appropriate parts are installed in exact specification as replaced parts.

  • Reads instructions, prints, manuals, and written procedural instructions.

  • Safely and professionally utilize; hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and forklift.

  • Works on pipe systems, which would involve repairing, modifying and installing systems.

  • Perform all phases of welding including MIG, TIG and SMAW.

  • Use an acetylene torch and plasma cutter.

  • Perform millwright work such as aligning a pump and motor with laser alignment tool, install sheaves, belts, align equipment, check installation for square and belt tension.

  • Basic understanding of Mill and Lathe operation

  • Remove and install bearings and be able to perform all maintenance work required on bearings.

  • Works with applicable predictive technologies to improve operations.

  • Works in conjunction with Operations to ensure that all equipment has been tested and is working in a safe manner and with satisfying results.

  • Assists with maintaining accurate records to include but not limited to: Maximo, storeroom, calibration, and drawings.

  • Assists supervision in the design of new equipment as well as replacement equipment to enhance the performance of plant processes.

  • Complete Preventative Maintenance and Down Day work orders with precision, ensuring that all components are verified for proper operation prior to startup.

  • Works in conjunction with Operations to ensure that all equipment has been tested and is working in a safe manner and with satisfying results.

  • Work scheduled shifts and overtime as assigned.

  • Completes Daily Paperwork to be turned in at the end of each shift, properly documenting all observed details (includes maintaining mechanical log).

  • Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner and follows all safety procedures.

  • Participates in the continuing training process.

  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly condition.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have the ability to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; to raise and lower objects without mechanical aids; to extend hands and arms in any direction to reach, push or pull objects; to bend at the knees and at the waist; and to talk or hear.

  • Ability to wear and use required safety equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, head protection, and gloves.

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Product & raw materials in excess of 50 lbs. must be moved with two employees.

  • Must be able to climb ladders and/or stairs. Work on elevated open grating and use catwalks and stairs in the work area. Frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the telephone and production line radios

  • Occasionally operate business machines.

Under This Roof, We Require

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Experience in a continuous process manufacturing environment, preferably 3-5 years

  • Experience in industrial maintenance, preferably 1 to 2 years

  • Ability to work independently particularly during overnight shifts

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety requirements and ability to work safety

  • Should possess or work toward electrical skills

  • Ability to communicate with others in a positive and professional manner

  • Familiarity with standard manufacturing concepts, practices, and procedures is helpful
