How you make a difference

The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is a healthcare professional responsible for providing standard and advanced respiratory care procedures to patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. They perform diagnostic tests and examinations, develop and implement respiratory care plans, and monitor patient response to therapy. RRTs also educate patients and families about respiratory care, provide emergency care during cardiopulmonary arrests, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs routine respiratory therapy procedures and assessments, including oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and arterial blood gas punctures.

  • Establishes and maintains airway care for patients, includingventilatorysupport during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and tracheal intubations.

  • Provides appropriate patient and family education on respiratory care modalities and medications.

  • Consults and refers to appropriate disciplines on difficult treatments and abnormal findings, and makes patient care related judgments within legal, professional, and ethical standards.

  • Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors, performs preventative maintenance on respiratory care equipment, and assists in inventory control and cost containment procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Knowledge of respiratory care concepts, methods or techniques as might be acquired through completion of an Associate or Bachelor degree program that is approved by the CAAHEP or CoARC.

Experience

  • Must have completed competency and skill in advanced airway management.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must maintain current licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the state of employment

  • Current credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care.

  • Must have certification for PALS, NRP and BLS if required by facility.
