Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose:

Responsible for daily operations, staffing, staff development, and employment decisions for hospital phlebotomy unit.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities:

Supervises all work performed during the shift. This will include, but is not limited to, organizing work flow, and prioritizing work as needed. Organizes work flow to ensure appropriate test result turnaround time with available staff. Responsible for review, update, creation, and implementation of phlebotomy policies & procedures.

Performs all duties of the phlebotomist and will troubleshoot instrumentation and procedures in an effort to maintain an efficient work flow. Will perform collection/receiving of specimens when work load of shift requires.

Will adjust work schedules/assignments when required to maintain adequate coverage of the laboratory at all times.

Will orient new employees on shift and department guidelines when hired and will train all employees on any new procedures, instruments or methods established. Will document competency of all staff within the section.

Effectively communicates departmental, organizational, and industrial information to staff. Attends organization's informational meetings. Resolves conflicts which may hamper relations and productivity. Uses hospital communications resources to inform internal and external audiences of departmental news, achievements, and policies.

Regularly and appropriately communicates information to direct supervisors-Technical Specialist and Operations Manager or Director. Addresses instrument and procedural problems

that occur and reports problems and issues. Addresses complaints, or staffing problems, that occur and reports findings and issues.

Is responsible for the shift's operational excellence. Manages all activities so that quality services are provided in an efficient and effective manner. Ensures that all services provided meet all applicable regulatory requirements. Maintains an effective quality improvement program, as evidenced by reports. Stays abreast of laboratory methodology, instrumentation, procedures, and policies to offer the highest quality testing to the laboratory.

Consistently and fairly implements HR policies to promote positive employee relations, and/or implement progressive discipline procedures when necessary. Maintains effective and appropriate staffing by monitoring employee overtime, and absenteeism, will document attendance issues for Operations Manager.

Attends all required safety training programs to stay abreast of latest safety precautions and procedures, and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: 1+ years experience as phlebotomist

Pay Range

$15.49 - $21.30 /hour
